ABL Round 9 Wrap

James Lane

Sydney became the first team to clinch a spot in the Championship Series, navigating a road trip to Perth to take three of four. At the same time, Adelaide powered through Brisbane with a matching 3–1 series win, dragging themselves back to .500 and keeping their momentum in the battle for second.

Sydney Clinch in Perth

The Blue Sox arrived in Western Australia knowing the math was simple: win enough, and the postseason was locked. They did more than enough.

Thursday’s opener set the tone. Sydney led 3–2 entering the seventh before Perth surged ahead 6–4. Instead of folding, the Sox delivered their biggest swing of the night - four runs in the eighth and another in the ninth - to steal a 9–6win.

Perth hit back on Friday. After jumping out early and weathering Sydney’s push, the Heat tied the game in the seventh and then walked it off in the ninth for a 4–3 win that briefly delayed the celebration.

But Saturday was all Sydney.

Back-to-back shutout-style performances - a 3–0 win followed by a commanding 7–1 victory - slammed the door on the series and officially punched the Sox’s ticket to the Championship Series. The bats were timely, the pitching suffocating, and the message clear: Sydney are built for January baseball.

Giants Maintain Push for Second

While Sydney locked things up, Adelaide quietly put together one of the most convincing weekends of their season, while the Bandits faint championship hopes finally kicked the bucket.

Thursday’s opener was over almost immediately. The Giants scored three in the second, four in the third, and another in the fourth, cruising to a brutal 15–2 win before Brisbane had even settled in.

Brisbane responded on Friday, scraping out a 10–7 victory by scoring three runs in the ninth to break a deadlock. It would be their lone bright spot.

A 9–2 win was followed by a dramatic 6–5 victory for Adelaide on Sunday, in which Brisbane led at every major checkpoint before the Giants ripped the game away in the ninth. It was the kind of loss that lingers.

Looking Ahead

  • Blue Sox: 23–12 (clinched)

  • Giants: 17–17

  • Heat: 15–19

  • Bandits: 14–21

Sydney are safely in. Adelaide are surging at the perfect time. Perth remain alive but fragile. Brisbane are done.

With the finish line in sight, Brisbane head to Sydney, needing a miracle run against a team already playing with postseason confidence. Meanwhile, Perth travel to Adelaide, where a Giants side at .500 will see a huge opportunity to separate themselves.
