The 2025 BentSpoke John I Dent Cup is off and running, with Round 1 delivering a mix of high-scoring shootouts, late drama, and standout individual performances across Canberra’s premier rugby competition.
Whites too strong for Gungahlin
Queanbeyan sent an early message to the rest of the competition with a clinical 40-22 win over Gungahlin. The Whites looked sharp in both attack and defence, running in six tries to secure five competition points. Gungahlin, meanwhile, will be disappointed not to come away with anything from a match in which they showed glimpses of promise but were ultimately outgunned.
Leiper hat-trick not enough as Royals hold off Vikings
Tuggeranong’s Joel Leiper stole the spotlight with a hat-trick, but it wasn’t enough to get the Vikings over the line, falling 38-24 to the Royals. The reigning premiers absorbed sustained pressure and countered with clinical finishing of their own, with their bonus-point win placing them second on the ladder after one round. Tuggeranong managed a single bonus point for their effort but will be frustrated not to have capitalised on Leiper’s haul.
Last-minute heroics lift Owls over Lions
The most dramatic finish of the round came at Jamison Oval, where the Uni-Norths Owls edged out Western Districts 36-34 in a thriller. It was the Owls’ Samuel Toa who slotted an 81st-minute penalty goal to seal a dramatic win. The Lions showed attacking flair throughout and earned two bonus points for their close loss and try tally, but it was the Owls who left with the spoils and a valuable five-point haul.
League Table Snapshot
For the Owls, Royals and Whites, it’s an ideal start, and all three teams sit tied on five points. For the rest, the pressure is already on to make a statement next weekend. Round 2 promises more fireworks as teams look to settle into the season.
