Australian sport farewelled one of its greatest motorsport figures on Thursday, with former Formula One world champion Alan Jones passing away aged 80. There was plenty of action elsewhere, as Brisbane Heat finally ended their lengthy WBBL winless run through a magnificent Charli Knott century, Perth Scorchers continued their unbeaten start and Illawarra Hawks claimed an important NBL victory. The Sydney Swans also found themselves back in the headlines for the wrong reasons, announcing an independent review of the club's culture following a series of damaging off-field incidents.

Motorsport — Australian F1 legend Alan Jones dies aged 80

Australian motorsport is mourning the death of Alan Jones, who passed away on Thursday following a short illness. He was 80. Jones remains one of the most significant figures in Australian racing history, having become the country's second Formula One world champion when he secured the 1980 drivers' championship with Williams. He won 12 Grands Prix across his Formula One career, including five victories during his championship-winning season. His 1980 title was secured with one race remaining, establishing him as the dominant driver of that campaign.

Born in Melbourne, Jones moved to Europe in 1970 to pursue his racing ambitions. After making his Formula One debut with Hesketh in 1975, he claimed his first Grand Prix victory with Shadow at the 1977 Austrian Grand Prix. His arrival at Williams in 1978 proved transformative for both driver and team. Jones became the first driver to deliver Williams a world championship, helping establish the British outfit as a major force in Formula One. He remains the last Australian to win the Formula One world championship, with only Sir Jack Brabham having previously achieved the feat.

Following his retirement from racing in 1986, Jones remained a prominent figure in Australian motorsport through television commentary and media appearances. His outspoken personality and willingness to offer forthright opinions made him a familiar voice to generations of racing fans. Tributes flowed from across the sport on Thursday, with Williams describing him as an Australian icon and a fundamental figure in the team's history.

Supercars head to Sandown for crucial championship round

The Repco Supercars Championship heads to Melbourne this weekend for the Sandown 500, with seven drivers fighting to secure one of four remaining places in the Adelaide Grand Final. Matt Payne enters the penultimate round leading the standings on 4,150 points, holding a 30-point advantage over Broc Feeney. Brodie Kostecki sits third, while defending champion Chaz Mostert occupies the final automatic qualification position. Two 250-kilometre races will take place across Saturday and Sunday, with a race victory guaranteeing automatic progression to Adelaide for any of the remaining contenders.

Cricket — Knott century ends Brisbane Heat's 706-day drought

The Brisbane Heat finally have something to celebrate in the Women's Big Bash League, ending a 706-day winning drought with a 14-run victory over Adelaide Strikers at Drummoyne Oval. The star of the afternoon was Charli Knott, who produced a magnificent maiden WBBL century, scoring 104 from 61 deliveries. Knott struck 12 fours and four sixes, reaching her hundred from just 56 balls before eventually being run out in the closing stages. Her innings carried Brisbane to 4-184, providing a challenging target for Adelaide.

The Strikers made a strong attempt to chase it down, with South African international Laura Wolvaardt scoring 75 from 48 deliveries and Madeline Penna contributing 68 from 45. The pair combined for a substantial partnership that kept Adelaide in contention, but Brisbane's bowlers found important breakthroughs during the closing overs. Sarah Glenn finished with 2-19, while Grace Harris also claimed two wickets as Adelaide finished on 5-170.

The result was Brisbane's first WBBL victory since November 2024, ending an extraordinarily difficult period for the club that included a winless 2025 campaign. For Knott, it was a particularly significant personal achievement and a timely reminder of her capabilities as one of the competition's emerging Australian all-rounders.

Scorchers maintain unbeaten start against Thunder

Perth Scorchers continued their excellent opening to the season, defeating Sydney Thunder by 17 runs in Thursday evening's other WBBL fixture. Beth Mooney was once again the foundation of the Perth innings, scoring an unbeaten 80 from 55 deliveries to help the Scorchers reach 3-183. Sophie Devine contributed 42 before making an unusual tactical decision to retire out with three overs remaining. The move allowed England's Freya Kemp to enter the innings and immediately attack, smashing 30 from just 10 balls, including three sixes.

Sydney Thunder made a reasonable start to their chase, with Phoebe Litchfield scoring 34 and Heather Knight contributing 27. Laura Harris then produced a brief burst of 29 from 12 deliveries to give the home side some hope. However, Alana King dismantled the lower order, claiming 4-35 as the Thunder were dismissed for 166 in 19 overs. The victory gives Perth three consecutive wins to begin its campaign, while Sydney Thunder will be disappointed after failing to capitalise on several promising individual contributions.

AFL — Swans launch independent investigation into club culture

The Sydney Swans have announced an independent review of their football department and club culture following a difficult period of off-field controversies. Chief executive Matthew Pavlich and chairman Andrew Pridham issued an apology to members and supporters on Thursday, acknowledging that the behaviour of some individuals had damaged the club's reputation.

The announcement follows two separate incidents. In August, five players were suspended by the club after breaching behavioural standards during a post-season stay at a Melbourne hotel. A separate police investigation into an alleged sexual assault at the hotel remains ongoing. No one has been arrested or charged in relation to that investigation. More recently, experienced forward Tom Papley returned a positive preliminary roadside drug-test indication after being stopped by NSW Police. Papley was also issued a court attendance notice for allegedly driving with a suspended licence following an unpaid parking fine. Importantly, the initial roadside result is not a confirmed laboratory finding. A second sample has been submitted for analysis, with results expected to take at least four weeks. Pavlich described the situation as deeply disappointing and said the club had made its feelings clear to Papley.

The independent review will be conducted by workplace culture organisation Intersection, led by Natasha de Silva. It will examine the club's existing protocols, programmes and standards, with recommendations expected by the end of the year. The Swans had already commissioned a broader examination of their football programme in September, but Thursday's announcement represents a significant escalation in the club's efforts to address its problems. The club has stressed that supporting those affected and rebuilding trust with its members and wider football community are now priorities.

NBL — Hawks silence Cairns crowd with second-half surge

The Illawarra Hawks have produced an important road victory, defeating the Cairns Taipans 107-95 at the Cairns Convention Centre. The Taipans started strongly in front of their home supporters, scoring 35 points in the opening quarter to establish a three-point advantage. Cairns maintained its narrow lead through the second period, entering half-time ahead 62-61. However, the Hawks gradually took control after the interval, producing a much stronger defensive performance and limiting the home side to just 33 points across the second half. Illawarra outscored Cairns 26-20 in the third quarter before pulling further away during the final period, eventually winning by 12 points.

The result is an important boost for the Hawks, who have endured an inconsistent opening to the campaign and needed to string together some positive performances. For Cairns, the defeat is a frustrating one after such a productive opening half. The Taipans will need to improve their defensive consistency if they are to remain competitive against the stronger teams in the competition.

WNBL — Townsville Fire continue winning run in Geelong

Townsville Fire have continued their promising start to the Women's National Basketball League season, defeating Geelong Venom 80-67 at Microkeeper Arena. The Fire established control early, scoring 29 points in the opening quarter while restricting Geelong to just 17. Geelong improved in the second period and remained competitive throughout the remainder of the match, but Townsville maintained its advantage to secure a 13-point victory.

The result represents another important road win for the Fire, who have now won three consecutive matches and moved into second position on the early-season ladder. Geelong, meanwhile, will be disappointed with its slow start, particularly after having shown encouraging signs during recent matches. The Fire's early-season form is developing into a promising story for the competition, with the club once again looking capable of challenging for a championship.

Football — Oakleigh strengthen Australian Championship campaign

Oakleigh Cannons have strengthened their position in the Australian Championship with a 2-0 away victory over Sydney Olympic on Thursday night. The Victorian visitors took the lead in the 18th minute through Arion Sulemani, who gave Oakleigh an early advantage at Sydney Olympic Park Athletic Centre. Sydney Olympic struggled to find a response, and the visitors doubled their lead shortly after half-time when Lebib scored in the 50th minute.

The result gives Oakleigh another valuable three points and strengthens its position in Group C, where the club remains unbeaten across its opening matches. For Sydney Olympic, the defeat is a setback after its recent victory over Marconi Stallions. The club will need to improve defensively if it hopes to remain in contention for a place in the knockout stages.

Boxing — Opetaia accepts heavyweight challenge against Wilder

Australian boxing champion Jai Opetaia has agreed to one of the biggest challenges of his career, announcing that he will move up to heavyweight to face former world champion Deontay Wilder. The bout will take place in Cardiff on 11 December, forming part of the undercard for the highly anticipated Tyson Fury-Anthony Joshua heavyweight showdown. Opetaia, who remains unbeaten across 31 professional fights, has established himself as one of the world's leading cruiserweights and holds The Ring Magazine's cruiserweight championship.

However, the decision to move into the heavyweight division represents a significant gamble. Wilder, 40, is one of boxing's most formidable punchers and previously held the WBC heavyweight championship for five years. His trilogy of fights with Tyson Fury remains among the most memorable heavyweight rivalries of the modern era. Although Wilder has lost several recent contests, his punching power remains a major threat to anyone entering the ring against him.

Opetaia's promoter Dana White acknowledged the danger involved but said the Australian was willing to accept challenges regardless of division. The fight will be broadcast globally on Netflix and provides Opetaia with an opportunity to significantly raise his international profile. For Australian boxing supporters, it is a fascinating development. Opetaia has long been regarded as one of the country's best active fighters, and a successful performance against a former heavyweight champion would represent a remarkable addition to his résumé.

Netball — Brisbane 2032 Olympic inclusion increasingly likely

Netball Australia has been caught somewhat off guard by reports that the sport is close to securing a place at the 2032 Brisbane Olympic Games. Reports published on Thursday suggested netball was near the top of the list of potential additional sports being considered by the Brisbane organising committee. The committee has the opportunity to propose up to six additional sports for inclusion, with cricket, surf lifesaving, rugby league and lawn bowls also reportedly under consideration.

Federal Sport Minister Anika Wells publicly declared her support for netball's inclusion, describing it as an important Australian sport with a significant participation base among women and girls. However, Netball Australia has been careful not to treat the reports as confirmation, emphasising that the formal selection process remains ongoing. An official decision is expected in April.

The possibility of netball joining the Olympic programme would be a major development for the sport, providing Australian players with the opportunity to compete for an Olympic medal on home soil. For the Diamonds, it could also provide a significant long-term target as the national programme develops towards the Brisbane Games.
