Caboolture FC left it late on Saturday night, overcoming a stubborn Capalaba Bulldogs side 2-1 to claim an important three points and strengthen their position inside the top four. Coming into the match, the Snakes were widely expected to defeat a Capalaba team sitting in the relegation zone and struggling for form. While the result ultimately went to plan, the visitors made Caboolture work much harder than many would have anticipated.
The breakthrough arrived in the 19th minute and it was a moment of genuine quality. Michael Holden collected the ball outside the left edge of the penalty area and unleashed a superb curling effort that flew into the net, giving the Snakes a deserved 1-0 lead.
From that point, however, the game settled into a slower rhythm. Despite controlling much of the play, Caboolture were unable to find the second goal that would have provided breathing room, leaving the contest delicately poised well into the second half.
That proved costly in the 74th minute. After spending much of the game under pressure, Capalaba launched a swift counterattack. A long ball down the right flank sparked the move before a high cross was delivered into the box and converted, bringing the visitors level at 1-1.
Suddenly, what had looked like a routine evening threatened to become a frustrating one. With time ticking away, the prospect of dropping points against a side battling relegation loomed large.
Fortunately for the Snakes, Orlando Lopez once again proved decisive. In the 87th minute, Lopez fired in a shot that struck a Capalaba defender’s hand inside the area, earning Caboolture a penalty. The forward then stepped up himself and calmly converted from the spot to restore the lead at 2-1.
The late goal proved enough to settle the contest, with the Snakes seeing out the closing minutes to secure all three points. It may not have been the dominant scoreline many expected against a struggling opponent, but the result is ultimately what matters. In a tight promotion race, finding ways to win even when not at their best is a valuable trait.
The victory keeps Caboolture’s momentum moving in the right direction and ensures they continue to hold their place among the league’s leading contenders as the season progresses.
