NRL Round 6: Injuries, comebacks and statement wins

Round 6 delivered big scorelines, gutsy finishes, and a growing injury toll that’s starting to shape the competition. Manly won big but lost their captain, Canberra rattled Melbourne, and Penrith survived a scare in Darwin, while Brisbane pinched one of the grittiest wins of the season.

Manly Sea Eagles 38 – 6 North Queensland Cowboys

Manly recorded their biggest ever win in Townsville, but it came at a cost with Tom Trbojevic lasting just 12 minutes before leaving with a suspected hamstring injury.

Lehi Hopoate starred early with a double as the Sea Eagles capitalised on repeated Cowboys errors to build a 22-6 halftime lead. North Queensland’s only points came through Coen Hess and a Ben Trbojevic error, but they were otherwise outplayed.

Manly remained composed after Trbojevic’s exit, with Tolu Koula shifting to fullback, and late tries to Taniela Paseka and Luke Brooks sealed a dominant performance.

Canberra Raiders 26 – 22 Melbourne Storm

Canberra produced one of their most complete performances of the season to hand Melbourne another loss.

The Raiders dominated large stretches, with Ethan Sanders controlling the game and Simi Sasagi crossing twice. Corey Horsburgh also made an impact, though his discipline nearly proved costly.

Melbourne stayed in the contest through tries to Sua Faalogo, William Warbrick and Nick Meaney, and briefly led at halftime, but the Raiders’ defence held firm late to secure a deserved win.

Penrith Panthers 23 – 22 Dolphins (Golden Point)

Penrith survived a dramatic second-half collapse to edge the Dolphins in golden point in Darwin.

The Panthers looked in complete control at 18-0 halftime, with Nathan Cleary and Dylan Edwards combining well and Tom Jenkins finishing strongly. But the Dolphins exploded after the break, with Herbie Farnworth, Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow and Selwyn Cobbo all crossing to turn the game on its head.

With the scores locked, Cleary iced the match in extra time after a strong run from Izack Tago. The win, however, was overshadowed by a serious leg injury to Mitch Kenny.

Warriors 28 – 20 Titans

The Warriors did enough to hold off a late Gold Coast surge, with Alofiana Khan-Pereira starring against his former club.

The winger scored twice in the first half, helping the hosts race to a 22-0 lead. The Titans rallied late with a flurry of tries, but time worked against them as the Warriors held on for an eight-point win.

South Sydney Rabbitohs 30 – 12 St George Illawarra Dragons

South Sydney returned to form with a controlled win over the struggling Dragons at Accor Stadium.

Latrell Mitchell led the way with four tries, combining brilliantly with Alex Johnston on the left edge. The Dragons were competitive for much of the match and even led early through Hamish Stewart, but a second-half send-off to Jaydn Su’A ended any hope of a comeback.

Errors and missed opportunities again hurt St George Illawarra, who remain winless and under mounting pressure.

Brisbane Broncos 21 – 20 Wests Tigers

Brisbane produced a gutsy, against-the-odds win to edge the Tigers by a single point in a gripping contest.

Despite losing Payne Haas early and dealing with multiple injury concerns, the Broncos made the most of limited opportunities. Adam Reynolds controlled proceedings, setting up tries and kicking a late field goal to seal the result.

The Tigers dominated possession and created chances, with Samuela Fainu and Api Koroisau crossing, but couldn’t break Brisbane’s defensive resolve when it mattered most.

Sydney Roosters 38 – 24 Newcastle Knights

For the third straight week, the Roosters overturned a halftime deficit to secure an impressive win, this time against Newcastle.

Trailing 24-12 at the break after a Fletcher Hunt hat-trick, the Roosters exploded in the second half. Sam Walker, James Tedesco and Hugo Savala led the charge, with Mark Nawaqanitawase also crossing as the hosts ran in a flurry of tries.

Newcastle faded badly after halftime, unable to contain the Roosters’ attacking surge.

Parramatta Eels 38 – 20 Canterbury Bulldogs

Parramatta produced a strong attacking display to defeat the Bulldogs, with Ronald Volkman at the centre of everything.

After conceding early, the Eels responded through Josh Addo-Carr before Volkman produced a brilliant solo try. Brian Kelly and Joash Papali’i combined for another highlight, while late tries to Tallyn Da Silva and Will Penisini sealed the result.

The Bulldogs showed glimpses through Lachlan Galvin and Bronson Xerri but were undone by errors and a knee injury to Jacob Kiraz, which adds to their concerns moving forward.
