South Africa dismantle Australia, Kangaroos run riot as North Melbourne claim AFLW minor premiership
Saturday was a difficult day for Australian cricket, with South Africa completing a remarkable turnaround to win the Test series 2-1. There was considerably better news elsewhere, as the Kangaroos demolished the Cook Islands to finish their Rugby League World Cup pool campaign unbeaten, North Melbourne secured another AFLW minor premiership and Australian basketball and football produced a busy afternoon and evening of action. The opening weekend of the Women's Big Bash League also continued, with Adelaide and Perth both recording convincing victories.
Cricket — Harmer destroys Australia as South Africa claim series
Australia's tour of South Africa ended in disappointment on Saturday, with the hosts securing a 176-run victory in the third Test at Newlands to take the series 2-1. Having been set a target of 288, Australia began the final innings with a reasonable opportunity to secure a series victory. Those hopes quickly disappeared, however, as Kagiso Rabada ripped through the top order before Simon Harmer took control.
Australia slumped to 40-4 and never recovered. Harmer exploited the deteriorating pitch to devastating effect, taking a remarkable 6-16 as the visitors were dismissed for just 111.
Cameron Green top-scored with 27, while Nathan Lyon remained unbeaten on 33 after a lengthy resistance alongside captain Pat Cummins. Rabada finished with 3-39, reaching the significant milestone of 350 Test wickets in the process. He also became the fastest bowler in history to reach that mark in terms of deliveries bowled.
Harmer's match figures of 10 wickets cemented his position as the standout performer, while Marco Jansen was named player of the series. The result represents a major setback for Australia, who had won the opening Test before suffering consecutive defeats. South Africa also reclaimed the No.1 position in the Test rankings for the first time since 2016. There will now be considerable scrutiny of Australia's batting order, with repeated collapses throughout the series raising questions about the team's preparation and selection.
Rugby League — Kangaroos finish pool stage with 66-point demolition
The Australian Kangaroos have completed an unbeaten Rugby League World Cup group campaign after thrashing the Cook Islands 66-6 in Townsville. Australia scored 12 tries in a dominant performance, although the Cook Islands briefly threatened to make things interesting after taking a 6-4 lead early in the contest. The Kangaroos responded with four tries in the final 13 minutes of the first half to establish a 28-6 advantage before completely taking control after the interval.
Tom Trbojevic and Jack Bostock both finished with hat-tricks, while Tino Fa'asuamaleaui scored twice. However, it was Reece Walsh who produced perhaps the most influential individual performance. The fullback scored a try and provided five try assists, earning player-of-the-match honours. Ethan Strange also made his international debut, entering the contest during the second half.
The victory secures Australia's position at the top of Pool A and confirms its place in the semi-finals. Coach Kevin Walters will nevertheless have some decisions to make, particularly regarding the fullback position, with Walsh and James Tedesco both having made compelling cases during the tournament. Australia will also be monitoring minor ankle concerns involving Trbojevic and Cameron Munster ahead of the knockout stages.
Earlier in the day, New Zealand produced an extraordinary 78-0 victory over Fiji, underlining its own championship credentials.
AFLW — North Melbourne complete historic hat-trick
North Melbourne have secured their third consecutive AFLW minor premiership after defeating Richmond 101-33 at Windy Hill. The Kangaroos produced another commanding performance, kicking seven unanswered goals during the first half to establish an unassailable advantage. Captain Jasmine Garner was outstanding with 28 disposals, while Ash Riddell and Ruby Tripodi also played important roles in the victory.
North Melbourne's sixth consecutive win ensures the club finishes the home-and-away season on top of the ladder once again. There was also plenty at stake in the other matches. Hawthorn secured the final finals position with a 94-39 victory over West Coast, producing the highest score in the club's AFLW history. Aine McDonagh and Poppy Stockwell kicked three goals apiece as the Hawks dominated the contest. Unfortunately, the result was overshadowed by a serious-looking knee injury to West Coast star Ella Roberts, who was helped from the ground during the opening minutes. The club will await scan results to determine the full extent of the injury.
Carlton kept its top-four hopes alive with a remarkable 40-35 comeback victory over Brisbane. The Blues trailed by 22 points at half-time before Sophie McKay took control, kicking all three of her goals after the main break, including the match-winner in the final three minutes. Port Adelaide also kept its slim finals hopes alive, defeating St Kilda 51-45 in a contest interrupted by a lengthy lightning delay. The final round of the home-and-away season now moves towards its conclusion, with Sunday's remaining fixtures set to determine the final positions and match-ups.
Football — Phoenix maintain perfect start as City defeat Sydney
Wellington Phoenix continued their remarkable opening to the A-League Men season with a 3-0 victory over Newcastle Jets at McDonald Jones Stadium. Corban Piper opened the scoring in the 14th minute after a VAR review confirmed his goal, despite an initial offside flag. Newcastle created several opportunities to equalise but struggled to find a way past Wellington goalkeeper Henry Gray. The visitors eventually put the result beyond doubt with two late goals. Riley Bidois scored in the 87th minute before Nathan Walker added another in stoppage time. The result gives Wellington three wins from its opening three matches, the first time in club history it has achieved that feat.
At AAMI Park, Melbourne City recovered from an early deficit to defeat Sydney FC 2-1.
Al Hassan Toure gave Sydney the lead in the 36th minute, but new City signing Emiliano Marcondes equalised almost immediately after half-time. Socceroos winger Awer Mabil then produced the decisive moment, scoring in the 62nd minute to complete the comeback. The match also featured a notable community initiative from Mabil, who provided 100 tickets for members of Melbourne's South Sudanese community.
The remaining men's fixture saw Macarthur FC and Western Sydney Wanderers play out a 0-0 draw at Campbelltown Stadium. The Wanderers thought they had taken an early lead through German Ferreyra, only for VAR to rule the goal out for offside following a lengthy review. The decision frustrated coach Ufuk Talay, whose side was unable to find a breakthrough against a determined Macarthur defence.
A-League Women
Central Coast Mariners continued their excellent start to the women's competition with a 2-0 victory over Adelaide United. Talia Kapetanellis scored both goals, finding the net in the 10th and 53rd minutes to give the Mariners their third consecutive victory.
Sydney FC also picked up its first win of the campaign, defeating Brisbane Roar 1-0 away from home. American forward Faith Webber scored the only goal in the 66th minute, rewarding a dominant Sydney performance in which the visitors created considerably more opportunities.
Australian Championship — Queensland Lions stun Wollongong
The Australian Championship continued with three group-stage matches, including an impressive away performance from Queensland Lions. Lions FC defeated Wollongong Wolves 3-1, recovering from a second-half deficit after Luke Scott had put the home side ahead in the 54th minute. Alex Ludwik equalised five minutes later before Harrison Pope and Matthew Hore added further goals to secure the victory.
Preston Lions also recorded an important result, defeating South Hobart 2-1. Preston established a two-goal advantage through early strikes from Bonada and Brooks before South Hobart pulled one back through Lancaster in the second half.
Sydney United 58 completed the day's winners, defeating Sutherland Sharks 2-1. Mason Wells opened the scoring before Sutherland's A. Harbas equalised, only for A. El-Sabeh to find a late winner in stoppage time.
NBL — Hawks steal Perth thriller as United overpower Taipans
Illawarra Hawks produced an important road victory, defeating Perth Wildcats 105-98 at RAC Arena. The Hawks controlled much of the first three quarters and entered the final period with a nine-point advantage. Perth then threatened to turn the match around, opening the fourth quarter with a 17-6 run to briefly take the lead. However, Illawarra responded through a superb late contribution from Western Australian guard Johny Narkle. Narkle produced a crucial four-point play before drawing another three free throws and adding a late dunk to help the Hawks regain control.
Kelan Martin led Illawarra with 23 points, including five three-pointers, while Narkle finished with 11 points and seven rebounds. Makur Maker also contributed 21 points in an important performance for the visitors. Perth's Anthony Dell'Orso top-scored with 21 points, but the Wildcats were unable to hold on after surrendering their advantage.
In Cairns, Melbourne United produced an impressive second-half performance to defeat the Taipans 113-97. Cairns led 54-51 at half-time, but United completely changed the momentum after the break, outscoring the home side 62-43 across the final two quarters. Josh Oduro led all scorers with 26 points, while Cole Anthony added 25. Joe Ingles also made an important contribution with 16 points. Jack McVeigh finished with 19 points for Cairns, but the Taipans struggled to contain United's attacking combinations after the interval.
WBBL — Strikers and Scorchers open campaigns with victories
The Women's Big Bash League continued on Saturday with two matches producing convincing victories for Adelaide and Perth. The Adelaide Strikers began their campaign with a 21-run victory over Melbourne Stars at Karen Rolton Oval. South African batter Laura Wolvaardt was the star with the bat, scoring 70 from 50 deliveries as Adelaide posted 185-2. Captain Tahlia McGrath added an unbeaten 43, while Madeline Penna provided a late burst with 36 not out from just 13 balls.
Melbourne made a promising start to its chase, with Meg Lanning and Rhys McKenna putting together a 77-run opening partnership. However, Amanda-Jade Wellington changed the direction of the match by taking three wickets for 28 runs. The Stars eventually finished on 164-7.
In Perth, the Scorchers made an emphatic start to their campaign, defeating Melbourne Renegades by nine wickets at the WACA. The Renegades initially struggled against Perth's bowling attack, slipping to 20-4 before Georgia Wareham and Nicole Faltum rebuilt the innings. Wareham scored 62 and Faltum contributed 48, helping Melbourne reach 136-6.
It proved nowhere near enough. Beth Mooney and Sophie Devine combined for an unbeaten partnership, with Mooney finishing on 58 and Devine on 47.Perth reached 138-1 in just 13.3 overs, completing the chase with 39 deliveries remaining.
