Round 16 produced one of the biggest upsets of the season, a milestone victory in Melbourne, and several tight finishes that could have major implications for the finals race. The Gold Coast Titans handed Penrith just their second defeat of the year, while Cameron Munster celebrated his 250th NRL appearance in style as the Storm powered home against Canberra.

Newcastle Knights 22-20 St George Illawarra Dragons

Newcastle survived a nervous finish to edge St George Illawarra by two points at McDonald Jones Stadium in front of 19,092 fans.

The Knights dominated the opening stages, with Fletcher Sharpe crossing twice inside the first ten minutes. Dominic Young helped create the first, while Bradman Best and Dylan Brown combined for the second as Newcastle raced to a 12-0 lead.

The Dragons responded through Valentine Holmes and Tyrell Sloan, with Holmes converting from the sideline to level the scores. Two late Sandon Smith penalty goals gave the Knights a 16-12 halftime advantage.

Smith then appeared to put Newcastle in control early in the second half when he won the race to a loose ball and converted his own try for a 22-12 lead.

St George Illawarra refused to fold. Setu Tu scored after a frantic goal-line sequence before helping create Dylan Egan’s try after regathering a bomb. Holmes missed both conversion attempts, leaving the Dragons two points short.

The visitors threw everything at Newcastle in a frantic finish, including a last-play kick that resulted in a bunker review for possible interference involving Sloan and Kyle Flanagan. The ruling went Newcastle’s way, allowing the Knights to cling on for a valuable victory.

Dolphins 36-22 Wests Tigers

The Dolphins overcame the absence of their Origin players and injured playmaker Isaiya Katoa to claim an impressive win at Campbelltown Stadium.

The Tigers struck first when Jarome Luai produced a clever kick for Sione Fainu, but the Dolphins gradually settled into the contest. Herbie Farnworth crossed after combining with Kodi Nikorima before Starford To’a restored the Tigers’ lead with a powerful individual effort.

The visitors took a narrow halftime advantage through Connelly Lemuelu and never relinquished control after the break.

Tevita Naufahu extended the lead before Fainu grabbed his second following another Luai grubber. Whenever the Tigers threatened, the Dolphins found an answer.

Trai Fuller redeemed an earlier error with a crucial try before combining brilliantly with Kurt Donoghoe and Nikorima in a flowing movement that effectively sealed the contest.

Alex Seyfarth gave the Tigers late hope, but a clever Brad Schneider kick eventually led to Jamayne Isaako crossing and securing a deserved Dolphins victory.

Gold Coast Titans 19-18 Penrith Panthers

The Titans produced one of the shocks of the season, upsetting competition leaders Penrith in a thrilling Saturday night contest.

Penrith appeared set for a comfortable evening when Liam Martin and Luke Garner helped establish a 12-0 lead. The Panthers dominated territory and possession, repeatedly attacking the Gold Coast line.

The Titans refused to buckle.

Young halfback Zane Harrison sparked the comeback with an inside ball that sent Kurtis Morrin racing away. Despite spending most of the first half defending, the Titans entered the break trailing by only six points.

Their resilience paid off after halftime. Harrison laid on tries for Arama Hau and Phillip Sami as the Gold Coast grabbed an unlikely lead despite Penrith continuing to dominate field position.

The Panthers looked set to escape when Lindsay Smith crossed late to level the scores, but Harrison capped a career-best performance by calmly slotting the winning field goal.

Having set up all three Titans tries, the young playmaker delivered the decisive moment to secure a famous 19-18 victory.

Canterbury Bulldogs 13-12 Manly Sea Eagles (Golden Point)

The Bulldogs emerged victorious from a scrappy contest at Accor Stadium, defeating Manly in golden point.

The Sea Eagles started strongly, with Lehi Hopoate opening the scoring before Ruben Garrick added another. Neither conversion attempt was successful, leaving Manly ahead 8-0.

Canterbury found a lifeline when a grubber kick bounced kindly for Stephen Crichton to score shortly before halftime.

The second half continued in similar fashion, with errors preventing either side from establishing momentum. Lachlan Galvin eventually broke through to give the Bulldogs the lead before Hopoate crossed for his second try to level proceedings once again.

Both teams squandered multiple opportunities to win the match in regulation time, including a straightforward field-goal miss from Jamal Fogarty.

Golden point proved equally chaotic. A bunker review awarded Canterbury a crucial penalty after Enari Tuala was ruled offside from a kick chase, and in the third minute of extra time Stephen Crichton finally landed the decisive field goal for a 13-12 victory.

Warriors 38-20 North Queensland Cowboys

The Warriors celebrated their trip to Christchurch with an entertaining win over the Cowboys at One NZ Stadium.

Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad was the star of the show, scoring four tries in a brilliant individual display.

The Warriors raced out of the blocks as Nicoll-Klokstad crossed twice in three minutes. North Queensland responded through Braidon Burns and Scott Drinkwater to level the contest, but the Warriors regained control before halftime with Nicoll-Klokstad’s hat-trick try.

His fourth shortly after the break put the hosts firmly in command.

The Cowboys’ hopes took a further hit when Jason Taumalolo was sin-binned for a dangerous lifting tackle, allowing Dallin Watene-Zelezniak to capitalise against the extra man.

Drinkwater continued to create opportunities for the visitors, but the Warriors had too much class. Adam Pompey and Taine Tuaupiki added further tries before Jeremiah Nanai grabbed a late consolation effort.

The result keeps the Warriors firmly in the hunt near the top of the ladder.

Melbourne Storm 42-20 Canberra Raiders

Cameron Munster marked his 250th NRL appearance with a memorable victory as Melbourne stormed home against Canberra at AAMI Park.

The Raiders stunned the hosts early, racing to a 20-10 lead through tries from Savelio Tamale, Owen Pattie, Xavier Savage and Matthew Timoko.

Melbourne responded through William Warbrick, Ativalu Lisati and Munster himself before Warbrick’s second try ensured the teams were locked at 20-all at halftime after an entertaining opening forty minutes.

The second half belonged entirely to the Storm.

Warbrick completed his hat-trick after another pinpoint kick from Jahrome Hughes before Moses Leo and Sua Fa’alogo added further tries as Melbourne’s class began to tell.

Trent Toelau put the finishing touches on the win late as the Storm piled on 22 unanswered second-half points to secure a convincing 42-20 result.

Sydney Roosters 27-8 Cronulla Sharks

The Roosters strengthened their top-four credentials with a professional victory over Cronulla at Allianz Stadium.

Despite the Sharks enjoying plenty of possession early, Sydney were far more efficient when opportunities arose.

Lindsay Collins opened the scoring after a sharp break from James Tedesco before Robert Toia and Billy Smith extended the lead to 14-0.

Cronulla stayed in touch through Ronaldo Mulitalo and Sione Katoa, but missed conversions prevented them from fully capitalising on their opportunities.

The Roosters regained control after halftime as repeated Sharks errors handed them valuable field position. Sam Walker added a penalty goal before Daly Cherry-Evans produced a superb kick for Mark Nawaqanitawase to score in the corner.

Cherry-Evans then iced the result with a field goal before combining with Toia to create Nawaqanitawase’s second try of the evening.

The 27-8 victory moves the Roosters back into the top four and further underlines their credentials as a genuine premiership contender.
