The 2025-26 A League season kicked off this weekend, in a round peppered with draws and positive starts for two new coaches.

Adelaide United Starts Andrioli Era with Victory

Adelaide United opened the Airton Andrioli era in style with a 2-1 win over Sydney FC on Friday night. The Brazilian coach singled out an unheralded Adelaide midfielder for his performance, while also praising Ethan Alagich’s contributions and reflecting on Craig Goodwin’s impact in the clash against the Sky Blues. The result gives Adelaide an early boost and sets a positive tone for Andrioli’s tenure.

Brisbane Roar Edge Macarthur Bulls in Narrow Win

New Brisbane head coach Michael Valkanis marked his first Isuzu UTE A-League victory with a 1-0 triumph over Macarthur Bulls at Suncorp Stadium. The match was a tight, combative affair, with the breakthrough coming from the penalty spot. Roar skipper Jay O’Shea confidently converted in the 34th minute after Bulls captain Luke Brattan was penalised for handball, proving decisive in a closely contested encounter.

Draws Across the League

Western Sydney Wanderers and Melbourne City shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw, leaving both sides searching for that extra edge ahead of Round 2. Meanwhile, Melbourne Victory and Auckland FC battled to a scoreless stalemate, highlighting defensive resilience but a lack of cutting edge in attack. Perth Glory and Wellington Phoenix also drew 2-2 in a lively contest that saw both sides exchange leads.

Mariners Hold Off Jets in Five-Goal Thriller

The Central Coast Mariners kicked off their campaign with a thrilling 3-2 win over Newcastle Jets. In a game packed with end-to-end action, the Mariners managed to hold their nerve and secure all three points, setting a competitive tone for the season.
