Auckland FC and Sydney FC will contest the 2025-26 Isuzu UTE A-League Grand Final after both survived tense semi-final second legs in dramatically different fashion over the weekend. Auckland powered past Adelaide United in emphatic style, while Sydney FC ended Newcastle Jets’ hopes of a domestic treble in a penalty shootout thriller at McDonald Jones Stadium.
Auckland Crush Adelaide to Reach Historic First Grand Final
Auckland FC booked their place in a first-ever A-League Grand Final with a commanding 3-0 win over Adelaide United at Coopers Stadium, sealing a dominant 4-1 aggregate victory.
After last week’s 1-1 draw in New Zealand, the tie remained finely poised heading into the second leg, but Auckland completely controlled proceedings in Adelaide, restricting the Reds to just one shot on target all night.
The result continues Auckland’s extraordinary dominance over Adelaide, with the Reds now winless in six meetings since the expansion club entered the competition in 2024.
Adelaide had entered the finals in an ideal position after securing second spot and the double chance on the final day of the regular season, but their campaign fizzled out meekly in front of home fans.
Jake Girdwood-Reich delivered the crucial breakthrough just before half-time, rising highest to head home Lachlan Brook’s perfectly delivered corner after confusion in the Adelaide defence. Auckland doubled their advantage in the 58th minute when Sam Cosgrove converted from the penalty spot after being brought down by Panagiotis Kikianis. Josh Smits got a touch to the effort, but the ball still rolled over the line after VAR upheld the decision.
Substitute Logan Rogerson sealed the result late on, finishing off a ruthless counterattack after being set up by Jesse Randall in the 86th minute. The Black Knights are now just one win away from adding a championship to the premiership they claimed in their inaugural campaign under Steve Corica.
Sydney Survive Shootout Drama to Break Jets Hearts
Sydney FC are through to the Grand Final after defeating Newcastle Jets 4-2 on penalties following another 1-1 draw, ending the Premiers’ hopes of completing a domestic treble.
With the first leg also finishing 1-1, the semi-final ended 2-2 on aggregate before Sydney held their nerve in the shootout at a packed McDonald Jones Stadium.
Sydney appeared set to progress in normal time when Piero Quispe scored in the 64th minute, reacting quickest after James Delianov parried an Akol Akon effort into his path. The Newcastle goalkeeper may feel he could have done better with the initial save.
The Jets pushed desperately for an equaliser and finally found one deep into stoppage time. In the sixth minute of added time, Eli Adams produced another huge moment in Newcastle’s finals run, volleying home Daniel Wilmering’s cross to send the home crowd into chaos and force penalties.
But Sydney regrouped superbly in the shootout. Harrison Devenish-Meares emerged as the hero, saving spot kicks from Kosta Grozos and Xavier Bertoncello. Although Joe Lolley also missed for Sydney, Ben Garuccio converted the decisive penalty to send the Sky Blues through. The result means fifth-placed Sydney FC will now travel to New Zealand to face Auckland FC at Go Media Stadium in next Saturday night’s Grand Final.
