FQPL Round 8 Preview: Snakes Look to Respond Against Bottom Side St George

Following last week’s narrow 3-2 defeat to league leaders Broadbeach United, the Snakes now host bottom-placed St George Willawong at 5:00pm: a fixture that presents an ideal opportunity to respond emphatically and get their campaign back on track.

St George arrive in difficult circumstances. Currently sitting rock bottom on just three points, they are already shaping as strong relegation candidates: and potentially facing back-to-back drops after competing in the NPL last season. That makes their current position all the more surprising, given they were only three points away from survival at the higher level just a year ago.

This season, however, has been a struggle. Their lone victory came in a 2-0 win over Redlands, but beyond that, results have been hard to come by. They enter this match on a four-game losing streak and have managed just three goals across seven matches, making them the least productive attacking side in the league.

Statistically, the contrast between the two teams is clear, particularly in attack. Caboolture have scored 13 goals so far this season, compared to St George’s three, highlighting a significant gap in offensive output. Interestingly, both sides have conceded the same number of goals (13), suggesting that while Caboolture have been far more dangerous going forward, defensive consistency remains an area for improvement.

In terms of style, St George typically line up in a 4-2-3-1 formation and have averaged 50.5 percent possession this season, not far off Caboolture’s 52.7 percent. That suggests they are not a side that simply sits deep, but their struggles in converting possession into goals have been evident.

There is, however, a historical note of caution. In the 2024 season, St George completed the double over Caboolture, winning 4-0 at home and 3-2 away. But this appears to be a very different St George side: one lacking the cutting edge and consistency that defined those earlier results.
