Sunday was a memorable day for Australian sport, headlined by the Jillaroos producing the biggest victory in Rugby League World Cup history, Ashleigh Gardner delivering one of the greatest individual performances in WBBL history and Brisbane's Tom Nolan scoring a major UFC upset. There was also plenty happening domestically, with Sydney claiming a dramatic one-point AFLW victory over Fremantle, Perth Glory recording their first A-League win of the season and the NBL producing two significant road victories.

Rugby League — Jillaroos rewrite the record books

The Australian Jillaroos have produced a performance for the history books, demolishing Wales 124-6 at CommBank Stadium to complete their Rugby League World Cup pool campaign. The 118-point winning margin is the biggest in Rugby League World Cup history, eclipsing Australia's previous record of 92-0 against France in 2022. The Jillaroos scored 21 tries and led 60-0 at half-time, leaving Wales with virtually no opportunity to establish any attacking momentum.

Jaime Chapman was the outstanding individual performer, crossing for six tries to equal the record for most tries scored by an individual in a World Cup match. Veteran winger Jess Sergis also had a remarkable afternoon, scoring four tries. Jesse Southwell was influential on her return to the starting side, scoring once, providing six try assists and kicking 20 goals from 21 attempts.

Wales eventually managed a consolation try through Paige Travis, becoming the first team to score against Australia in this tournament. It did little to diminish an extraordinary afternoon for the defending champions. Australia will now face Fiji in Sunday's semi-final at Allianz Stadium, with New Zealand and Samoa contesting the other women's semi-final.

Tonga edge Samoa in front of record crowd

The men's tournament also delivered a memorable contest, with Tonga defeating Samoa 20-18 in one of the most entertaining matches of the competition. A record crowd of 29,411 packed CommBank Stadium for the Pacific rivalry, which lived up to expectations with momentum swinging repeatedly throughout the contest. Samoa appeared to have seized control when Ronald Volkman scored to give his side an 18-14 advantage with approximately 10 minutes remaining.

Tonga responded through powerhouse forward Addin Fonua-Blake, who crashed over to level the scores before Isaiya Katoa converted to restore the lead. Samoa had one final opportunity to steal the victory, but a late Sua Fa'alogo try was disallowed after the winger's foot touched the sideline. The result sets up an intriguing semi-final programme, with Samoa to face Australia and Tonga taking on New Zealand.

AFLW — Swans win thriller as Suns narrowly miss double chance

Sydney have secured a home elimination final after edging Fremantle 37-36 in a remarkable finish to the AFLW home-and-away season. The Swans produced an important defensive performance in the closing stages, holding off a late Dockers charge to claim their ninth victory of the campaign. Chloe Molloy was the decisive figure, kicking four of Sydney's five goals and taking her season tally to 27, establishing a new AFLW single-season goals record.

Molloy also produced a crucial defensive mark late in the match to prevent Fremantle from getting another opportunity to snatch victory. The result secures Sydney's first home AFLW final, with the Swans set to host the Western Bulldogs in the elimination stage.

Suns win but fall short of top four

Gold Coast defeated Greater Western Sydney 62-53 at Henson Park, but the victory was not quite enough to secure a top-four finish. The Suns needed a substantial winning margin to overtake Carlton on percentage and claim the double chance. Despite leading by 20 points during the second quarter, they were unable to maintain their advantage and finished just 0.2 percentage points behind the Blues. Charlie Rowbottom was outstanding with 33 disposals, 12 clearances and two goals.

The match also marked the final AFLW appearances of retiring Giants Alicia Eva and Isabel Huntington. Both players finished their careers by getting on the scoreboard, with Eva kicking two goals and Huntington adding another. Elsewhere, Melbourne defeated Adelaide 47-29 to secure third position, ending the Crows' season in their final AFLW match at Unley Oval before the club moves to Thebarton next season.

Essendon also finished its campaign with a 38-31 victory over Collingwood, sending departing coach Natalie Wood out with a win. The match was also the final game in charge for Collingwood coach Sam Wright.

Football — Perth Glory hammer Adelaide United

Perth Glory finally have their first victory of the A-League Men season after producing a commanding 4-0 win over Adelaide United at HBF Park. The result was effectively secured during an extraordinary opening half-hour, with Perth scoring three times in the opening 33 minutes. Jaiden Kucharski opened the scoring in the 16th minute after capitalising on a defensive mistake, before 19-year-old Tadiwanashe Kuzamba doubled the advantage four minutes later with his first goal in professional football. Stefan Colakovski added a third in the 33rd minute, leaving Adelaide with a mountain to climb. The visitors improved after the interval and enjoyed plenty of possession, but struggled to turn that into meaningful scoring opportunities.

Substitute Matthew Ellis eventually completed the rout in the 85th minute, heading home to make it four. For Perth, the victory represents a welcome turnaround after losing their opening two matches. Adelaide, meanwhile, have now suffered three defeats in eight days across domestic and continental competition.

Australian Championship — APIA produce Lambert Park comeback

Wests APIA have celebrated their return to national competition at Lambert Park with an emphatic 5-2 victory over Avondale in the Australian Championship. The Sydney club found itself trailing 2-1 at half-time after Avondale overturned an early Michael Konestabo goal through strikes from Keitatsu Kojima and Niyah Joseph. APIA responded almost immediately after the break, with Seiya Kambayashi producing an excellent volley to level the scores. Marquez Walters then restored the hosts' advantage in the 68th minute before Jack Stewart and Taye Hedley added further goals to complete the comeback.

The result takes APIA to seven points from three matches in Group B and represents an important milestone for the club, which had not hosted a national league fixture at Lambert Park for 35 years.

Oakleigh claim shootout bonus against Bayswater

The other Australian Championship fixture produced a very different contest, with Bayswater City and Oakleigh Cannons playing out a goalless draw. Neither side could find a breakthrough during regular time, although Oakleigh eventually claimed the additional competition point by winning the penalty shootout 4-2. The match's decisive moment came when Oakleigh coach Chris Taylor introduced 19-year-old goalkeeper Lachie Charles specifically for the shootout. Charles immediately justified the decision, saving Bayswater's opening penalty. Further misses from the hosts allowed Oakleigh to secure the bonus point.

Bayswater remain top of Group C with seven points, while Oakleigh sit just one point behind.

Cricket — Gardner produces extraordinary WBBL performance

Ashleigh Gardner has delivered one of the most remarkable individual performances in Women's Big Bash League history, leading the Sydney Sixers to an 87-run victory over Hobart Hurricanes at Drummoyne Oval. Gardner smashed 124 from just 60 deliveries, rescuing the Sixers after a disastrous start had left them struggling at 6-3 in the third over.

The Australian all-rounder combined with England international Alice Capsey, who finished unbeaten on 54, for an extraordinary 176-run fourth-wicket partnership.

Gardner's innings included 10 fours and nine sixes, making it the fourth-highest individual score in WBBL history. It was also her second century in the competition. The Sixers eventually posted 8-196 from their 20 overs, giving the Hurricanes a challenging target. Gardner then continued her outstanding afternoon with the ball, taking 3-23, while Melie Kerr also claimed three wickets as Hobart were dismissed for 109 in 17.4 overs.

The performance was particularly rare, with Gardner becoming only the second player in WBBL history to score a century and take at least three wickets in the same match. The victory gives Sydney two wins from its opening two matches, while defending champions Hobart have now lost their first two games.

NBL — JackJumpers and Bullets claim road victories

The Tasmania JackJumpers produced an impressive performance in Melbourne, defeating South East Melbourne Phoenix 98-89 at John Cain Arena. Tasmania entered the contest in difficult circumstances after losing two important players, Ben Gold and David Johnson, to injuries following Friday's defeat to Sydney. Despite the disruptions, the JackJumpers controlled much of the game and had contributions from all five starters.

Dakota Mathias led the way with 22 points, seven rebounds and six assists, while Taran Armstrong added 18 points and Nick Marshall contributed 17. The Phoenix threatened a comeback during the final quarter, reducing the margin to just three points, but Tasmania responded with a decisive scoring run to secure the victory. D'Shawn Schwartz led South East Melbourne with 27 points, but the home side struggled to contain Tasmania's balanced attack.

Bullets spoil 36ers' anniversary celebrations

Brisbane Bullets also produced an important away victory, defeating Adelaide 36ers 96-89 at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre. The result was particularly disappointing for Adelaide supporters, who had gathered to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the club's famous 1986 championship-winning team. Brisbane established a 13-point advantage during the opening quarter and maintained control for much of the contest.

Tyrell Harrison was outstanding with 24 points and 10 rebounds before fouling out late in the game. Nate Hinton added 18 points, seven rebounds and six assists, while veteran Brazilian point guard Raul Neto contributed 14 points. Bryce Cotton led Adelaide with 27 points and nine assists, but the 36ers struggled from long range, converting just six of their 32 three-point attempts. The victory lifts Brisbane to a 5-5 record and moves the Bullets above Adelaide on the ladder.

Tennis — De Minaur falls short in Vienna final

Alex de Minaur's impressive run at the Vienna Open has ended in defeat, with Carlos Alcaraz winning Sunday's final 6-1, 6-4. The Spaniard controlled the opening set and maintained his advantage throughout the second, eventually completing the victory in 97 minutes. De Minaur had enjoyed an excellent tournament, defeating top seed Alexander Zverev in the semi-finals to reach his first Vienna final.

Although he was unable to claim the title, the Australian remains in the final qualifying position for the ATP Finals in Turin. De Minaur currently sits ninth in the Race to Turin with 3,210 points, just one point ahead of Spain's Rafael Jodar. The upcoming Paris Masters will therefore be crucial, with the Australian needing another strong performance to secure his place at the season-ending tournament.

Combat Sports — Nolan stuns Moicano in UFC main event

Australian lightweight Tom Nolan has recorded the biggest victory of his professional career, stopping former UFC title challenger Renato Moicano in the main event of UFC Fight Night in Las Vegas. Nolan secured a third-round TKO at 1:28, finishing the Brazilian with punches and elbows after surviving considerable grappling pressure during the opening round.

Moicano initially threatened with his trademark submission game, taking Nolan's back and attempting to work towards a rear-naked choke.

The Brisbane fighter defended effectively and gradually found his striking range, landing several significant head strikes during the second round. Nolan continued the pressure in the third before eventually forcing the referee to intervene. The victory extends his UFC winning streak to six fights and represents a major breakthrough for the 26-year-old, who was competing in his first UFC main event. It is another significant result for Australia's growing presence in international mixed martial arts.
