The Queensland Kappa Pro Series reached the knockout stage this week, and the quarter-finals delivered a compelling mix of control, tension, late drama, and decisive moments under pressure.
Brisbane Olympic 2 - Logan Lightning 0
Brisbane Olympic booked their place in the semi-finals with a composed 2-0 victory over Logan Lightning, in a match where they looked the more dangerous side throughout.
Olympic’s attacking intent was reflected clearly in the set-piece count, earning six corners to Logan’s one, and they eventually turned that pressure into a breakthrough shortly before halftime. With the lead secured, Olympic remained in control after the break and doubled their advantage in the 68th minute, sealing a professional performance and a deserved progression.
Lions FC 3 - Wynnum Wolves 0
The scoreline suggests comfort, but Lions FC’s win over Wynnum Wolves was far more complex than the 3-0 final result implies.
For long stretches, the contest was evenly poised, with the statistics pointing toward a much closer battle. The defining moment came right on the stroke of halftime, as Lions struck in the second minute of added time to take a crucial lead into the break.
From there, Wynnum’s task became harder, and discipline played a major role in the outcome. Lions’ second and third goals both came from the penalty spot, converted in the 70th and 78th minutes. Wynnum will be left wondering what might have been, particularly whether an equaliser was possible had they held their nerve after falling behind.
Peninsula Power 1 - Brisbane City 1 (Brisbane City wins 5-3 on penalties)
The standout thriller of the round came at A.J. Kelly Park, where Brisbane City edged Peninsula Power in a dramatic penalty shootout after a pulsating 1-1 draw.
The match’s first goal didn’t arrive until the 75th minute, when Peninsula finally broke through and looked poised to claim victory. But the contest turned sharply in the 86th minute when Peninsula were shown a red card, a wrinkle that changed everything late on.
Even down to ten men, Peninsula appeared set for the semi-finals, only for Brisbane City to produce a crushing equaliser in the 90+3 minute, forcing extra time. Neither side could find a winner in the additional period, sending the match to penalties.
There, goalkeeper Josh Langdon proved the hero, delivering once again in a shootout moment - just as he did in last year’s Australia Cup campaign - as City prevailed 5-3 to advance.
Brisbane Roar Youth 2 - Moreton City Excelsior 4
Moreton City Excelsior kept their trophy push alive with a hard-fought 4-2 win over Brisbane Roar Youth in a match that swung back and forth throughout the night.
City struck first in the 16th minute, but the Roar responded quickly, equalising in the 24th. The sides went into halftime level at 1-1, setting the stage for a wide-open second half.
Moreton regained the lead in the 61st minute through a penalty, before extending their advantage further in the 77th. Brisbane refused to fade, pulling it back to a one-goal deficit in the 84th to create a tense finish, but City had the final say with an insurance goal in the 90th minute to close out the contest.
