Caboolture SFC produced a dramatic late victory on Friday night, defeating Sunshine Coast Wanderers 2-1 away from home and handing their opponents their first loss of the season.
In a match that unfolded exactly as expected against a defensively organised Wanderers side, chances were few and hard-earned throughout a tense opening period. The first real opportunity did not arrive until the 23rd minute, when a long-range effort from Caboolture was tipped over the bar by Sunshine Coast keeper Kade McDougall. Another chance followed in the 32nd minute, but the shot sailed just over, reflecting the fine margins that defined the contest.
Caboolture’s defensive structure held firm in the first half, limiting the Wanderers’ attacking threat. The hosts’ best moment came in the 37th minute on a break, but Bon Scott reacted well to diffuse the danger and preserve the deadlock heading into halftime.
The pattern continued after the break, with both sides probing but neither able to find the decisive breakthrough until the 58th minute.
It was Leo Robinson who would ultimately produce the moment of quality needed to break the deadlock, unleashing a stunning long-range strike that flew into the top corner to give Caboolture a deserved 1-0 lead.
The Snakes looked in control, but the Wanderers responded, desperate to maintain their unbeaten start to the season. In the 74th minute, a long-range effort forced another strong save from Scott, but from the resulting corner, the hosts capitalised, bringing the match back to 1-1.
Determined to ensure their disciplined defensive performance was not undone, the Snakes pushed forward in search of a winner. Chances came, but the finishing touch remained elusive. Substitute Thomas Mitchell thought he had delivered the decisive moment in the 89th minute, only for the offside flag to deny him.
Just as it seemed the Snakes would be forced to settle for a draw, the decisive moment arrived deep into stoppage time. A sustained attacking move inside the box resulted in a penalty in the 92nd minute. Ethan Docherty stepped up and showed composure under pressure, calmly slotting the ball into the bottom right corner to restore Caboolture’s lead.
There would be no further twists this time. The Snakes held firm to secure a crucial 2-1 victory: a result that not only ends the Wanderers’ unbeaten start to the season, but also lifts Caboolture to 10 points and into third place on the table.
