Caboolture SFC were forced to settle for a 2-2 draw at home against Logan Lightning on Saturday night, conceding a late equaliser in a match peppered with chances, controversy, and missed opportunities.
The Snakes started brightly, creating several early openings but not quite able to find the finishing touch, in a pattern that would define much of the first half. With 62% posession, Caboolture seemed well on top for much of the match, completing an impressive 549 passes compared to just 274 by Logan. In the 17th minute, Caboolture thought they had broken through: a patient passing move culminated in a low cross from out wide being deftly finished by Michael Holden. The celebrations were short-lived, however, curtailed by an offside flag.
Just minutes later, the game turned in the opposite direction. A small slip in midfield allowed Logan to intercept and break quickly. The visitors took full advantage, striking from outside the box in the 20th minute to take a 1-0 lead against the run of play and leave Caboolture ruing their early missed chances.
Caboolture continued to push forward for the remainder of the half, generating yet more chances but remaining unable to convert. The snakes headed into the break still trailing despite having the better of the opportunities.
The second half began with renewed intensity. In the 48th minute, a long-range effort forced a save from the Logan goalkeeper, earning a corner that would prove pivotal. From that set piece, Logan handled the ball inside the box, resulting in both a penalty and a red card. Jack Waldock stepped up and calmly converted the penalty into the bottom left corner, levelling the score at 1-1 and giving Caboolture both momentum and a numerical advantage.
The Snakes looked to press that advantage. In the 56th minute, they again thought they had taken the lead from a corner, only for another goal to be ruled out, adding to a growing sense of frustration.
As the match wore on, Caboolture continued to probe. While Logan managed a higher number of shots (17 compared to 13), Caboolture had more on target (7 and 5). That their persistence finally paid off in the 85th minute. Waldock grabbed his second of the night from close range, putting the Snakes deservedly ahead and seemingly on course for a hard-earned victory.
But there was to be one final twist to the night. In the 88th minute, a Logan corner was delivered into the box and met with a powerful header that flew into the top right corner, bringing the score level at 2-2 despite their numerical disadvantage.
The final minutes saw Caboolture push desperately for a winner, while Logan did everything possible to slow the tempo and protect the point. A late attacking free kick in stoppage time offered a late opportunity, but the Snakes were unable to find the decisive breakthrough. Ultimately, the match was a tale of missed opportunities, with several near misses and two goals ruled out leaving Caboolture wondering what could have been.
The result leaves Caboolture in fifth place on seven points, maintaining the one-point gap behind Logan, who hold the final playoff spot. The table remains tightly packed, with Holland Park, Ipswich FC, and Redlands United also sitting on seven points.
Elsewhere in the round, North Star secured a 1-0 win over St George Willawong thanks to an 87th-minute goal. Redlands United twice came from behind to defeat Holland Park Hawks 3-2, while Ipswich FC and Brisbane Strikers played out a 0-0 draw. Sunshine Coast Wanderers climbed to second place, remaining unbeaten with two wins and three draws after a 2-1 victory over Robina City. In the Sunday game, Broadbeach United reinforced their position atop the table with a 5-2 thumping of bottom-placed Capalaba.
