Caboolture are through to the next round of the Queensland Cup after a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Coomera Colts on the road, a far tighter contest than many may have expected.
The Snakes were forced to earn it the hard way, with Coomera twice fighting back to level the match and push the contest deep into the final minutes.
Caboolture struck first in the 20th minute, with Orlando Lopez opening the scoring to give the visitors an early advantage. But the response from Coomera was swift, equalising just seven minutes later to bring the game back to 1-1.
The Snakes regained control before halftime. In the 36th minute, Cameron Nairn found the net to restore the lead at 2-1, and this time Caboolture were able to carry that advantage into the break.
That lead held well into the second half, with Caboolture appearing to manage the contest as time ticked on. But in the 73rd minute, Coomera struck again, levelling the match at 2-2 and setting up a tense finish as the prospect of extra time loomed.
With the upset threat growing, Caboolture needed a response, and it came from a familiar source. In the 88th minute, Orlando Lopez grabbed his second goal of the night, restoring the lead at 3-2 and putting the Snakes back in front at a crucial moment.
There was still time for late drama. Tempers flared in stoppage time, with a flurry of yellow cards and a red card shown to each side as tensions boiled over in the closing stages. Despite the chaos, Caboolture held firm to see out the result and secure their place in the next round.
