Snakes Stumble in Ipswich

Caboolture’s perfect start to the 2026 FQPL1 season came to an abrupt end on Saturday afternoon, falling 3-1 away to Ipswich FC in a what was a frustrating Round 3 defeat.

The Snakes had entered the match with six points from two games and strong expectations of maintaining their early momentum against a side tipped to battle relegation this campaign. Instead, Ipswich sprung an upset, producing an organised and opportunistic performance to claim all three points.

Despite the eventual scoreline, it was Caboolture who struck first. A long throw into the box created chaos in the Ipswich defence before the ball fell to Andrew McLeod. With quick control and a sharp turn, he beat the nearby defenders and fired a low finish into the bottom right corner to give the Snakes the lead.

The advantage, however, would not last. In the 28th minute Ipswich drew level after a sliding challenge inside the Caboolture penalty area resulted in both a yellow card and a spot kick. The hosts converted the penalty to bring the match back to 1-1.

The equaliser seemed to shift the rhythm of the contest in the home side's favour. Ipswich began to grow into the game, particularly through attacking set pieces, while Caboolture increasingly looked to break on the counterattack. As the first half wore on, the hosts appeared the more threatening side.

That momentum carried into the second half, and Ipswich took the lead in the 67th minute with what can only honestly be described as a well-worked goal. The move began deep in their own defence, where they won possession before quickly working the ball wide through a sequence of passes. A decisive through ball then split Caboolture’s defensive line, and the finishing strike floated over the goalkeeper before dropping perfectly into the top-left corner.

Chasing the game late, Caboolture pushed forward but were unable to find a response. Instead, it was Ipswich who found the net again, sealing the result in the 86th minute. A free kick from roughly 30 metres out near the sideline was worked forward before a deflected shot fell kindly inside the box. The follow-up strike was converted despite goalkeeper Bon Scott getting a touch, making it 3-1 and effectively ending the contest.

The disappointing defeat halts Caboolture’s early-season momentum and serves as a reminder that consistency will be crucial if promotion ambitions are to remain realistic.

Elsewhere around the league, St George Willawong collected their first points of the season with a 2-0 victory over Redlands United, climbing out of the relegation zone and pushing Redlands - who are still without a win after one draw and two defeats - further into early trouble.

Broadbeach United maintained their perfect record with a 2-1 win over Holland Park Hawks. With three wins from three and 11 goals already scored, Broadbeach are quickly establishing themselves as a serious contender at the top of the table.

Brisbane Strikers continued their strong start as well, edging Robina City 3-2 to remain unbeaten with two wins and a draw, lifting them over Caboolture and into second place.

At the other end of the table, Logan Lightning defeated Capalaba Bulldogs 3-1, leaving Capalaba as the only side yet to collect a point this season, sitting bottom with three losses from three.

Finally, the Sunshine Coast Wanderers downed North Star to grab their first win of the season, moving into sixth and remaining unbeaten with two draws having opened their campaign. North Star, meanwhile, sit within the relegation zone with a solitary point so far.

For Caboolture, attention now turns to bouncing back in Round 4 with an important away game against the Strikers, and ensuring this setback does not derail what had been a promising opening to the campaign.
